Birmingham Illustration

In this assignment, we were tasked with picking a city to illustrate, and I decided to choose Birmingham. This city holds a special place in my heart because it is where I spent the majority of my life. It's a place I am deeply familiar with, and interestingly, I had never done an illustration focused on it before, so this assignment gave me the perfect opportunity to combine my love for the city with my artistic skills.

The process of illustrating Birmingham was truly enjoyable. I found myself really getting into the details of the city’s buildings, the textures, and the overall architecture. I wanted to capture the essence of the city through my artwork, so I made sure to pay attention to the structures that make Birmingham unique. One thing I really aimed for in my illustration was to merge the buildings and the typography in a way that they worked together seamlessly, reflecting the character of the city itself.

A fun twist that I discovered along the way was that I could tie in the name of the city with Alabama, since Birmingham is the largest city in the state. I felt lucky that the city’s name also contains an "A" in it, which allowed me to creatively connect the illustration to the state’s identity. The "A" became a key design element in my artwork, helping to reinforce the connection between the city and the state in a subtle but meaningful way.
